Retailers begin helping with HD-DVD blues

Posted by : RiseStar , Lounge0101 Administrator

With Toshiba's HD DVD throwing in the towel, conceding to the more popular Blu-Ray platform, many consumers are finding themselves in the same position that Betamax purchasers found themselves in during the VHS vs Betamax wars; stuck with expensive equipment that is now obsolete.

Circuit City is one of the first retailers to step forward however with a trade in offer. The offer extends to those customers who purchased a HD-DVD player within the past 90 days from the retailer. The return program offers a 100% credit towards a Blu-Ray player. The customer is responsible for paying any differences in price and is only valid for HD-DVD equipment, not the high definition videos. The offer is not being advertised, so customers need to ask for it in the store. An alternative to the exchange is your HD-DVD player can also be exchanged for a Circuit City gift card.

Toshiba, in abandoning the HD-DVD format, has stated that they will instead focus their attent ...

Echostar announces digital television converter for under $40

Posted by : RiseStar , Lounge0101 Administrator

Echostar has announced plans to step up to the plate and begin offering set top digital television converters to the public in anticipation of the coming digital television transition which will eliminate analog off the air signals by February 2009. After the transition, consumers with older analog televisions will no longer be able to receive off the air broadcasts without a set top digital receiver or digital to analog converter.

The U.S. federal government has previously announced a $40 rebate coupon would be available to consumers to help subsidize the cost of digital converter, however previous costs for digital set top boxes were far in excess to that.

The Echostar Model TR-40, which will carry a $39.95 suggested retail, is expected to be eligible for the National Telecommunications and Information Association (NTIA) converter-box coupon program, which will make up to two $40 coupons available to households that qualify.
The TR-40 will includ ...

Update to 2009 Digital Convergence

Posted by : RiseStar , Lounge0101 Administrator

February 2009 is approaching and there is still a lot of confusion and still numerous problems about the FCC mandated switch from analog television to all digital broadcasts.

The FCC has mandated that all off the air broadcasts must in an all digital format by February 2009, at which time the old analog signals will be shut off. This of course means that analog televisions will require some type of set-top receiver in order to continue to receive local off the air broadcasts. Many newer high end television come with digital tuners built in, allowing reception of off the air digital broadcasts. Older analog televisions however will require a converter box to continue to receive their local programming.

The FCC has announced that beginning January 1, 2008 the federal government will offer each U.S. household two coupons worth $40 each to be used to purchased digital television converter boxes. There are an estimated 21 million households in the U.S. th ...

As analog TV fades to white

Posted by : Daryl Gray , Lounge0101 Administrator

This past week, a new bill came before the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee that will dramatically affect off-air television signals.

This comes on the heels of a 2002, controversial U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandate, designed to help kick-start the digital television revolution. The mandate came after an earlier voluntary request to include digital television tuners in new televisions was scoffed at by many major electronics manufacturers as being too expensive. The FCC mandated that by 2004, all television manufacturers must begin including digital television tuners into half of all televisions that are 36" or larger. By 2007, every new television 13" or larger must include a digital tuner capable of receiving off air digital broadcasts.

From a broadcasting standpoint, the 2002 FCC mandate also forced all television broadcasting stations to begin offering the signals in digital in format by 2007. There are currently over 1500 ...

The Adirondacks
PBS 9:00 pm ET
It's a state park, but it's home to more than wildlife. More than 100,000 people live in New York's Adirondack Park year round, and about half its 6 million acres are privately owned. This new special offers an armchair tour of this unique mountain region and those who call it home, from the loggers and innkeepers whose livelihood it provides and the artists it inspires to the athletes training at the Olympic Village. And did we mention the spectacular scenery?
Boston Legal
ABC 10:00 pm ET
Imagine: his name on the door of the Oval Office. In this new episode, some political bigwigs approach Denny -- Denny Crane! -- about running for president. You can stop shuddering now; Denny (William Shatner) is fictional, remember? Jerry (Christian Clemenson) is asked to defend an ex (Rachelle Lefevre) accused of prostitution, and Carl and Shirley (John Larroquette, Candice Bergen) represent a woman suing for the right to become a Catholic priest.
South Park
COM 10:00 pm ET
A disturbing but extremely clever episode, "Britney's New Look" is a spot-on satire of the cult of celebrity with shout-outs to Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" and "Frosty the Snowman." When Britney Spears shows up in South Park to dodge the media, the boys see an opportunity to make a quick buck by snapping her picture. It doesn't go well. They try to help Britney escape to the North Pole, and ... did we mention it doesn't go well?

Saved!
OXYGEN 7:00 pm ET
Satirizing people's religious beliefs is tricky business. "South Park" pulls it off by being an equal-opportunity offender. This 2004 comedy-drama doesn't. Jena Malone plays a Baptist high-school student who sleeps with her boyfriend in an effort to "cure" his homosexuality. It doesn't work, but she does get pregnant and is shunned by her holier-than-thou classmates. Uh, where's the comedy? Oh, there it is, in the characters' names. The pregnant girl is Mary, and the chief villain is a snooty classmate named Hilary Faye -- like Tammy Faye, get it?
Blood Diamond
MAX 7:30 pm ET
Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou were Oscar-nominated for their work in director Edward Zwick's ("Legends of the Fall") exciting and socially conscious drama about two men uncomfortably aligned in the search for a rare gem in late 1990s Africa. A smuggler (DiCaprio) and a farmer just released from prison (Hounsou) have different motives for the pursuit. Jennifer Connelly also stars as a reporter who gets in on the hunt.
America's Next Top Model
CW 8:00 pm ET
"Easy, breezy, beautiful"? Try nerve-racking. In the season finale, season nine winner Saleisha Stowers plays cheerleader as the three remaining contestants try to shine in a commercial and print ad shoot for CoverGirl makeup. One can't cut the mustard -- or would that be the mascara? -- and is sent packing. The final two show their stuff in a fashion show, and the winner is crowned.
Deal or No Deal
NBC 8:00 pm ET
On the road again ... . This new episode has host Howie Mandel and two contestants visiting South Africa, which has its own version of the hit game show. As they try their luck at winning the $1 million top prize, viewers at home have the opportunity to vote for a new model for the upcoming season and win $10,000. Sounds like a good deal all around.
The Number 23
HBOE 8:00 pm ET
Comedic actors who want to do drama need to choose their roles very, very carefully. Jim Carrey got it right with "The Truman Show," a media-age morality play with a pleasantly light touch. He missed the mark in this 2007 mystery as a man obsessed with a book he receives as a present. He finds its main character, a detective, stunningly similar to himself. He also notices how much a certain numeral -- check the title again -- plays a role in the sleuth's life. Somewhere in this mediocre movie is a good one screaming to get out; don't hold your breath.
Farmer Wants a Wife
CW 9:00 pm ET
These wannabe farmer's wives can't seem to get through an episode without somebody having a cow. In the new episode "Wet 'n Wild," it's Christa and Brooke, whose hostility toward each other escalates. And Stacey's comments at the swimming hole have all the women on edge. A tractor race lets them show their skill -- or lack thereof -- with heavy machinery, while a date with Matt turns into a family outing.
Maxed Out: Hard Times, Easy Credit and the Era of Predatory Lenders
SHO 9:00 pm ET
The title doesn't quite say it all. Everyone knows credit cards and home-equity loans are still too easy to get, but this 2006 documentary explains why. Lenders prey on those least likely to read the fine print or reject outrageous rates, such as the mentally challenged and the previously bankrupt, and the results can be literally deadly, as we meet the families of two college students who committed suicide after running up huge credit-card debts.
CSI: NY
CBS 10:00 pm ET
Just when you thought it was safe to get back in the cab ... . A man believed to be the "cabbie killer" is found dead in the new episode "Taxi." But Mac (Gary Sinise) and his team won't rest until they determine whether this is the right guy, or the real killer is still at large. Melina Kanakaredes, Carmine Giovinazzo, Hill Harper and Eddie Cahill also star.
Law & Order
NBC 10:00 pm ET
You can be anyone you want on the Internet, and that can really complicate a crime investigation. Ask Lupo and Bernard (Jeremy Sisto, Anthony Anderson), who link the murder of an auto mechanic to a money-laundering scheme involving his boss's online girlfriend. It turns out the woman's mother is pretending to be her own daughter ... who has gone missing. Linus Roache also stars in the new episode "Personae Non Grata."
